Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital in St. Louis merged in 1996 to become Barnes-Jewish Hospital, each with a rich tradition of excellence.
Barnes Hospital was founded in 1941 and became one of the first medical teaching centres in the United States, while Jewish Hospital was established in 1902 to care for the growing immigrant population in St. Louis.

From prevention to diagnosis to treatment, the Barnes-Jewish Washington University Heart and Vascular Center has the technology, staff and expertise to provide complete cardiac care, with board-certified cardiologists recognized as leaders in cardiovascular care. The Center has pioneered many procedures, from ablation therapy to valve repair and replacement, and long-lasting implantation of ventricular assist devices. Barnes-Jewish Hospital performed haemodialysis in 1968 and is one of the providers of dialysis services in the United States.
